‘Who’s going home with your mobile phone?’
As part of the PR Project Management module, a group of Advantage Award students have been raising awareness about the perils of not looking after your mobile phone whilst on a night out in the city. Between 01/09/10 – 31/07/2011 a total of 637 students had their phone stolen whilst enjoying Nottingham’s nightlife.
The students held two awareness raising events, one at Crisis – Rock City on 7th December, and one in the Portland Building on Wednesday 1st February.
During these events the group handed out leaflets, stickers and information about keeping your phone secure on a night. As one member of the group pointed out:
‘Mobile phones aren’t just phones: they also carry important texts, numbers, photos and memories. Protecting your mobile phone doesn’t need to involve more than a few simple precautions, be smart, be aware.’
Melanie Futer, Off Campus Student Affairs Manager and Module Convenor has been delighted with the students work on this project:
‘All the way through from conception, delivery and the presentation yesterday to the Night Time Economy group, I have been impressed by the students enthusiasm, confidence and professionalism. The people with whom they have worked –Inspector Scurr from Nottinghamshire Police, Sylvia Oates-Chief Executive of ‘We are Nottingham’ and the manager of Rock City have also been impressed and asked that I pass on their congratulations on a worthwhile project which was well delivered. The best accolade is that the project will be repeated in the same format later this year in conjunction with Nottingham Trent and the wider community.’
The campaign has proved to be really successful, here’s what one of our students said about his experience.
‘Personally I would recommend this project to everyone, it gives you the chance to meet interesting people and put into practice skills you have may learnt through your studies or life outside university which was a very valuable experience.’
