Anatomy, Careers and Volunteering at Sutton Bonington
Catrin Rutland and Karen Braithwaite, Module Convenors
There are three new Nottingham Advantage Award modules based at Sutton Bonington Campus. These modules vary from volunteering and work experience, to enhancing your employability and communicating science.
Fitting in academic work alongside extracurricular studies, while also achieving a good work, study, life balance can be difficult. We at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science (SVMS), along with the Careers and Employability Service and other staff and students, wanted to create new modules that are easily accessible for you, including if you are based at Sutton Bonington Campus.
Take a look at what we have for you:
Communicating anatomy through art and media
Last academic year, our campus Art and Science day was so popular, requests came flooding in for art sessions in anatomy. This module develops that idea and allows you to spend time in the anatomy environment to create art – drawing, fiction writing, photography, filming – in order to achieve wellbeing and personal development of artistic skills.
In addition to art, there will be sessions on how to build basic, user friendly websites and communicate science to a wider audience. You will be assessed on a portfolio and will be asked to participate in or help to organise either the website or the Campus Art and Science day.
Availability: Open to all University of Nottingham students
Career Skills for Veterinary Students
Are you studying in the School of Veterinary Medicine or the Faculty of Science? This module will help you to think clearly and dynamically about your personal development, employability, career paths and job seeking skills.
You will get specialist advice and guidance throughout the module from employers, Careers advisers, alumni, and staff in the SVMS. They will support you in reflecting on your continuing career development. You will be assessed on a reflective career plan and the preparation of a CV.
Availability: Open to School of Veterinary Medicine and Science students
Effective Volunteering
You, like many of our students, may already be undertaking a large variety of community and volunteering activities. This module will enable you to write up these activities and gain credit towards your Award.
Some example activities include:
- Vets in the Community
- unpaid extramural studies
- helping with the Sutton Bonington Farmers’ Market
- mentoring through Big Vet Little Vet
- working at the Sutton Trust
- taking part in MayFest
- helping to host open days
- performing in musical concerts for the public
- undertaking caring responsibilities
- organising charitable activities
You will be assessed through a reflective portfolio about an event you have attended or organised.
Availability: Currently only open to School of Veterinary Medicine and Science students
What Next?
The three new modules will run during the spring semester. You can register for the modules from December until the end of January. If you cannot choose which module you want to complete then why not take all three? Although please not that you can only complete a maximum of 20 credits per academic year.
All facilitated sessions, lectures and practicals will be held on Sutton Bonington Campus. If you have any questions then please contact Dr Catrin Rutland or Dr Karen Braithwaite.
