What To Do In Nottingham This Christmas

My favourite time of year has rolled ‘round once more, and oh so quick! It’s that magical time of year again; filled with gingerbread lattes, pumpkin spice and hearty cheer, the final month of the year brings with it this contagious feeling of joy and excitement that envelopes us despite the gloomy skies and harsh winds. And since December has officially begun, I thought I’d share my thoughts on what to do in Nottingham this Christmas; the city has everything you need to make it a December to remember this winter!

Old Market Square

Is it really Christmas if you haven’t seen the markets? Nottingham’s Old Market Square has been transformed into a glorious Winter Wonderland!  If you haven’t already, it’s worth having a wander around Nottingham’s Christmas Market this festive season. With a total of 70 stalls this Christmas, the market has been expanded since last year, bringing us even more variety and – if you’re as indecisive as I am – more choice than you know what to do with! Taking in the sights, aromas and sounds as you browse the markets is a great way to get you into the festive spirit, and Nottingham’s has something everyone: artesian foods, plants, hand-crafted jewellery, artwork and festive scents, the list goes on! So make a trip into town this December, the markets are open until Christmas Eve this year, and operate with extended hours in the final week leading up to Christmas should you still be on the lookout for that perfect gift!

Wollaton Hall & Deer Park

Any excuse to visit this place! Wollaton Hall is easily the most Christmassy stately home around the festive period, or any period really! The house and museum are gorgeous and private or group tours are available every weekend for a chance to see the Hall in all its festive glamour. Of course, the beauty of its interior is a given, but its fields are just as beautiful in the crisp, winter air, and f you time it right, you’ll even get to spot the wild deer that inhabit it; and what’s more Christmassy than some deer!? They also have other events and attractions set up to welcome the festive period! Christmas gift shops, Santa’s Grotto, Christmas readings and carolling along with a large array of Yuletide foods!

Festive Concerts & Pantomimes

Another way to fill your December evenings and encorporate some festive cheer is by attending a concert or pantomime here in Nottingham!  A guaranteed PAN-tastic evening (sorry, I couldn’t resist!), watching a production at any point of the year really serves to brighten my spirits. But especially so during the festive season; they seem to have a sort of charm to them that I cant quite explain. What I can say however, is that Nottingham offer an abundance of shows particularly during this season. Showcases and pantos can be found at various locations including Nottingham Playhouse, The Theatre Royal and even Nottingham’s very own Arts Centre. They have a vast array of shows on this season ranging from Peter Pan to The Elves and the Shoemaker. Definitely worth a visit if you’re a fan of them, or even if you’re not; there’s a certain charm about them, trust me.

So there you have it! Just a few ways to spend your December days that involve actually getting out of the comforting warmth of your room for once. The skies may be gloomy, but you don’t have to be – Happy December!
