Inspiring Females | Engage

This BUCS This Girl Can Week, we’re running a series of blogs featuring inspiring females in sport from across all departments. Claire Lenehan is an Occupational Psychology Master’s student here at the university, and attends Squash Engage sessions regularly.

“I go to the Engage Squash sessions every Tuesday evening. I started back in October and loved it so have been going ever since. This semester I also wanted to try something new so I have now started going to Engage Table Tennis sessions on Sundays which is really fun.”

“I played hockey and tennis in school but when I moved from Dublin to Nottingham I decided that it was a good opportunity to try things that I’ve never done before, given the wide range of sports offered at the university. As I’m doing a Masters and it’s quite intense, I didn’t want to commit to being part of a competitive team, so when I heard about Engage it seemed like the perfect way to play sport just for fun.”

“The social side of the Engage sessions has been the most rewarding thing for me – being new to the university, city, and country it has been a great way to meet people outside of my course in an easy, relaxed environment.”

“This year I’m looking forward to watching some of the varsity games! I love the team spirit that emerges when the whole uni comes together with the one goal of beating another uni.”

“The thing I’m looking forward to most as part of BUCS This Girl Can week is watching some of the female teams’ home games. Again, I really enjoy the sense of community and team spirit you feel when cheering on your home team. I think it’s also really important to show your support for women’s teams in general, as this can increase visibility and potentially the funding for these teams in the future.”

We’re running a number of events this BUCS This Girl Can Week, from our Girls-Only Campus Run to our esteemed Girls’ Night In on Sunday the 10th March! For more information, make sure you’ve liked the Engage Facebook page.

Engage Squash sessions run every Tuesday, 6-7pm at David Ross Sports Village and 8:15-10pm at Sutton Bonington Sports Centre. The session is £3 or free for sport and fitness members, no booking is required just turn up and play!
