BUCS Big Wednesday: #GreenandGold dominate Women’s Squash Trophy

The University of Nottingham Women’s Squash 2s have made a dream start to UoN Squash’s day at the BUCS Big Wednesday finals, with a convincing 4-0 win in the Trophy final against Bristol University 2s.

The UoN squad lived up to their reputation as favourites, earned by not dropping a single game in the 2018 Trophy competition ahead of the final. En route they saw off Sheffield 4-0 in the quarter final and Newcastle in the semi-final – also 4-0. They also finished 3rd in a very competitive Midlands 1A league that included Leicester 1s, Warwick 1s and Oxford 1s.

Here’s how the team lined up against Bristol:

  1. Aisling Guerzoni
  2. Evelyn Murrell
  3. Hannah Daly
  4. Hannah Bishop
  5. Helen Walker (Captain)

First seat Aisling Guerzoni and 3rd seat Hannah Daly were up first in their respective singles matches. Aisling Guerzoni won her match 3-0 and Hannah Daly swiftly followed with another comprehensive 3-0 victory.

Next up was second seat Evelyn Murrell who continued University of Nottingham’s fine form and recorded another 3-0 victory. In the final match of the Trophy final Hannah Bishop sealed the BUCS Trophy for the University of Nottingham with a 3-1 victory, meaning that University of Nottingham maintained their record in the tournament so far winning the final 4-0 and Helen Walker didn’t even need to take to the court!

Aisling Guerzoni told us just how much the victory means to the squad:

“It feels amazing to have won the BUCS trophy, we are so happy to have accomplished this achievement as a team. Last year we got to the final and lost by one point so this year it is really satisfying that all of our hard work and resilience has paid off and we were able to win the Trophy.”

“This victory is particularly special for the club as it shows the growth and consistency we have throughout the club, for our second team to share in the success that the first team have had in recent years is a testament to the quality of players that we have throughout the club.”

Next up both the UoN Squash Men’s and Women’s first teams take to the court for the Championship final – follow the action live at @UoNSport!
