Team of the Week: Women’s Football 1st

Our Team of the week this week goes to Women’s Football 1st after producing an impressive attacking display to defeat local rivals Nottingham Trent University 1st in a top of the table clash!

The two teams had previously met at the start of this season, which ended on a draw. University of Nottingham headed into this fixture, however with confidence high after winning all their fixtures since this game without even conceding a goal. Tanya Oxtoby, head coach, made a few tactical tweaks to the squad’s formation, from the previous fixture, hoping to continue their unbeaten streak.

It was top goal scorer Katie Gray who opened the scoring in the 14 minute, latching onto a fine through ball before drilling it into the back of the net. Five minutes later US scholar Karly Zlatic extended the lead for the visitors planting a strong header past the Trent keeper. The Nottingham Trent supporters arrived in their number, but UoN remained unfazed and kept the pressure on their opponents.

NTU did have a chance to get back into the game when two UoN players, in true Steven Gerrard fashion slipped in front of the 18 yard box allowing the NTU forward through on goal. Goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich was quick off her line however and quickly collected the dangerous loose ball. The ladies put on a strong display, creating numerous chances throughout the game. Second half goals from Linnea Kremer and Olivia Mitcham sealed the game off.

This 4-0 win now puts the team comfortably on top of the Midlands 1A table and firmly in the hunt for promotion to Premier North.  The win was a great celebration for three US scholar players, Erin Owen, Lindsay Guice and Katey Lippett, who were playing their last match in #GreenandGold before graduating.

Captain Kayla Kret was delighted with the performance;

‘’ This was a massive win for us! It separates us in the table giving us a 5 point lead which will be crucial as we approach the end of the season.’’

Next up in UoN Women’s Football 1’s quest for promotion will be a game against Loughborough 2s away today. This is a crucial fixture as they look to extend the winning streak to 7 games . They also remain in the hunt for the BUCS Trophy Cup title, with the promise of a final on home turf at BUCS Big Wednesday a huge incentive!
