Eight sports, three campuses, one university

One hundred and eighty student athletes are set to compete in an international sporting event at The University of Nottingham this month.

A unique event within the higher education sporting calendar, The Tri Campus Games brings together students from the University’s three international campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia. The Games, which are being hosted at the UK campus for the first time since 2012, will take place from Sunday 21–Friday 26 June.

Ahead of the competition, Tournament Director Steve Farey explained “The University of Nottingham is a global institution and internationalisation is at the heart of everything we do. The Tri Campus Games provides an opportunity for students from each of our international campuses to meet their peers, build relationships and celebrate that global position.”

Friendship through sport

“We’re expecting a competitive tournament and all of our athletes will want to claim the Tri Campus Games trophy for their campus but ultimately the tournament is underpinned by the ethos of ‘friendship through sport” added Farey. “Sport is just the vehicle for us to deliver cultural and educational exchange in the friendly spirit of competition.”

The University’s Newark Hall of residence will be transformed into the athletes’ village for the week with all athletes living on-site together. As well as the sporting programme, the athletes will take part in a number of social and cultural activities, including a trip to York and the chance to explore Nottingham itself.

The tournament will be hosted at the University’s Jubilee Campus in the recently expanded Sports Centre and includes badminton, basketball, football, squash, table tennis, tennis, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball.

Now in its seventh year, the success of the Tri Campus Games has also inspired a similarly focused 10-day arts programme hosted by Nottingham Lakeside Arts. The Tri Campus Arts programme this week brings together talented students from all three international campuses in an intensive schedule of theatre and music workshops, masterclasses and rehearsals.
