Badminton in the community

Community is defined by a group of people having a particular characteristic in common and Wednesday 14th January brought together over 200 local school children and performance badminton players to learn from the talented stars of the University of Nottingham National Badminton League team, achieving just that.

The National Badminton League is a game-changing initiative to bring exciting and dynamic professional badminton to the masses in England. With monthly Monday night matches this new format of the game with a unique scoring system and brand new in-game features, the NBL has attracted a brand new audience to the sport. To support this development the University of Nottingham Sport NBL franchise looked to those in the community with a vested interest in the sport and hosted a ‘day with the stars’.

With Bob Blair, World Silver Medallist flying in from Scotland, Alex Langley driving from Leeds and Ellen M taking the day as a break from revision, children from schools right across the county were treated to a one hour session of smash up badminton, an exhibition match and a Q&A session with the players.

It was such a great, inspiring and exciting day all round. It was so nice to see so many young children playing badminton & having so much fun doing so. We hope to have inspired lots of people to pick up a racket and play. It would also be great to see many of the faces as the University of Nottingham NBL team take on Loughborough Sport on 26th January and Surrey Strom on 23rd March at the Albert Hall, Nottingham’ Chris Adcock.

The aim of the day was to enthuse and inform different sectors of the community about badminton and our NBL franchise University of Nottingham Badminton. It was an exciting, fun packed day of badminton that everyone involved enjoyed.

‘It was great to see a number of NBL stars in attendance on the day passing on their experiences and knowledge to Nottingham’s finest young badminton players using Badminton England’s smash up program, engaging over 150 school children.

Please come and support our team on the Monday 26 January against local rivals Loughborough and again on Mondayy 23 March against Surrey. Both games are at the Albert Hall in the centre of the city. It will be a fantastic evenings’ entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.’ Martyn Lewis, Head Coach UoN Sport Badminton.
