Commonwealths – Days 2 to 4

With the hockey team resting, and squash and high jump yet to start to the University of Nottingham contingent, attention turns to Paul McCreery in the table tennis. On Friday Ireland comfortably swept aside Vanuatu 3-0, with Paul winning his match 3-0. This set up a knockout tie with fourth seeds Nigeria. Unfortunately Ireland lost 3-2, but Paul managed to beat two time commonwealth gold medallist segun torriola 3-2 which is a fantastic scalp for Paul to claim.

In the badminton, Robert Blair and Kieran Merrilees were both successful in their last pool match versus New Zealand, but this brought about a quarter final tie against top seeds Malaysia, and although Blair won his mixed doubles rubber, the team went down 3-1.

Meanwhile Chris Adcock’s England team, which is ranked second, brushed aside Jersey 5-0 and Mauritius 5-0 to bring about a quarter final tie versus Sri Lanka. Another straightforward 3-0 victory sets up a semi final tie against India. Chris is pictured top right.

Sunday’s highlight was the England vs Malaysia Men’s Hockey Match featuring current student Harry Martin and alumni Pinner and Catlin. After a tight first half with the match tied at 1-1, England put on a blistering performance in the second half to win 8-1.
