What do you Frink? Jeremy Corbyn drops in to see The University of Nottingham’s latest exhibition
The leader of the opposition party, the Rt. Hon. Jeremy Corbyn MP, has visited The University of Nottingham.
Mr Corbyn came to Nottingham University’s Business School this evening (Thursday 11 February 2016) to deliver a talk to Nottingham students and invited Labour supporters. Prior to the talk, he made time to see the Elisabeth Frink Exhibition at Nottingham Lakeside Arts.
Mr Corbyn mingled with guests at Lakeside Pavilion before taking a guided tour of the well-known British artist’s work, currently on display at The Djanogly Gallery.
He said: “Well done to Nottingham University for putting on the Elisabeth Frink exhibition. It is a wonderful display. I like Horse and Walking Madonna, with which I took a selfie, and the reconstruction of the studio and workshop.
“She was one of the great sculptresses of our age and we have to always have space for art. I want us as a society to make sure that all new buildings have space for art so that the next Elisabeth Frink can be displayed.”
The exhibition, The Presence of Sculpture, is running until Sunday 28 February, and is host to more than 70 public sculptures, drawings and never-before-seen material loaned from collections across the UK. It celebrates the subjects of Frink’s distinctive expressive bronzes – male figures, heads, metamorphic bird and beast shapes and animals.
Throughout her lifetime Frink received many commissions for public buildings, urban environments and sacred spaces. This exhibition presents the stories of these sculptures from studio to place.
