Royal Society Lecture (Report)

The Royal Society Rutherford Memorial Lecture was held on the 18 Oct 2012 at UNMC. It was presented by Professor Martyn Poliakoff, who is Vice President of the Royal Society and also a University of Nottingham Professor.

He is also well known for his Periodic Table of videos, which have had over 27 million views and have just passed 117,000 subscribers.

His talk focussed on Super Critical Fluids, and was accessible to both chemists and non-chemists alike.

From the feedback I have received, the lecture was enjoyed, and appreciated, by the audience (which included our own staff and many people from other institutions, as well as industrial partners such as Petronas).

We will be issuing a press release soon, so keep an eye on our news pages if you are interested.

We also video’ed the lecture and will also be able to make that available soon.

Many people were involved in organising this event. We have thanked them on behalf of UNMC but I would particularly like to thank Zabidah Yusof, Josephine Flora Dionisappu and Oliva Draeger (Zabidah and Josephine are pictured, in the header picture, standing either side of Martyn); who are the people I mainly interacted with whilst the event was being planned.

I’d also like to thank Tracey Elliot (from the Royal Society, and pictured above) who offered UNMC the opportunity to host this event, and was also very helpful in its organisation.
