International student societies: Omani, Sikh, Bengali and Nordic Societies

Joining student societies is a great way to make new friends and settle into student life, so we’re sharing messages from some of Nottingham’s many international and cultural student societies on our blog this week. Find these societies, along with many others, at the Welcome Festival during 21 to 25 September.

Omani Society

OmaniSociety logoWelcome to the Omani Society of Nottingham.

OmaniSocietyThe Omani Society represents the Omani students in the city of Nottingham. Our main aims are introduce the Sultanate of Oman to the Nottingham community, show our culture, traditions, history, and even food through traditional and social events. You are more than welcome to join us and all are welcome “Omanis and non-Omanis” who are interested in Oman, its culture and events.

Sikh Society

No one is my enemy, and no one is a stranger

Open to all backgrounds, Nottingham Sikh Society aims to teach its members about Sikhism. We want to familiarise members with Sewa (selfless voluntary work), Ekta (unity) and Simran (meditation). We aim to do this through various social, religious and sports events.

This year we are excited to introduce our very own football team, as well as host events suggested by you!

Excluding suggestions, here’s an idea of what we have planned for 2015/16:

  • SikhSocietyInsightful talks on Sikhi
  • Simran (meditation) sessions
  • Peer mentoring
  • Langar on Campus
  • Kirtan on Campus
  • Sewa – Guru Nanak’s Mission
  • Film nights
  • Go Karting
  • Sports events
  • Street parchar

Keep updated with our events by liking our Facebook page  or follow us on Twitter (@uonsikhsoc). Membership is just £5 for the year!

Bengali Society

BengaliSocietyFirstly, a big welcome to our new incoming international students! The University of Nottingham Bengali Society is committed to getting our members involved. Through fun socials such as dinners in town, movie nights and sport socials, we try to build a sense of community amongst our members. We welcome Bengali’s from all parts of the world, and celebrate the uniqueness and similarities of our culture.

Come over to our freshers stall to find out more about the socials and events we have planned. We will also have a meet and greet which will be confirmed soon. Looking forward to seeing you in September!
