Gada: Creating a platform for change

In the Ingenuity Lab, no day is the same and every member has a different story and requirements.  As a group, we support each other, collaborate and ensure we have as much fun along the day; creating a melting pot of ideas!  Each week, we will introduce one of our exemplary members and their business to you!

Today we have University of Nottingham alumni, Dr Mattia Fosci to share his experiences as a budding entrepreneur and Ingenuity Lab member…

What did you study at the University of Nottingham?

Law.

What made you want to be an entrepreneur?

I think ambition is what had the most influence in leading me down the path of entrepreneurship. I had a desire to create my own ‘thing’ and see the impact of my work.

What is your business concept?

I’m creating a social networking site that allows people interested in issues of public concern to be informed, connect with one another and take collective action.

Gada will be the go-to place for those who care: a space to discuss social and environmental problems, propose ideas on solutions and become part of a buzzing community of experts and activists to make positive changes.

What stage are you currently at in setting up your company/business?

I’m currently at the design stage. Since February, we have been conducting extensive market research and have begun developing the prototype.

What challenges have you faced during the process?

I have faced so many challenges. However, I think there have been three which are the most significant. To begin with, I was challenged by the process of developing a sustainable business model. As well as this, being able to clearly define customers needs has been a long, but worthwhile, process. Finding the technical expertise to help with the actual creation of an online platform was also difficult, but I like to think of all these experiences as a learning curve which can help me strengthen and develop my business for the future.

How has being an Ingenuity Lab member helped you?

Being part of the Ingenuity Lab’s community has opened up many doors. When my previous developers let me down, a fellow lab member introduced me to a new developer and the lab helped me source an intern with coding skills. Discussions with Steve Chapman, Rob Carroll and the other entrepreneurs allowed me to question my assumptions and see the venture in a new light.

Through the Ingenuity Lab, I also made contact with the Horizon Institute, which is now a partner and will help me research the information needed to develop such a new and challenging product.

What are your goals for this year?

I’m planning on launching and testing an alpha and a beta version of the service, and create an early user base. I’m also looking to raise investment over the next few months.
