Ingenuity18 in a nutshell: What to expect

Ingenuity18 is here to help you find your lightbulb moment, connect you with thought leaders and industry experts, and will provide an exciting opportunity for you to celebrate your creativity and innovation.


INGENUITY18 IDEAS SUMMIT

If you don’t know already, the Ingenuity18 Ideas Summit is a ground-breaking, weekend-long event and the first of its kind at The University of Nottingham. It’s open to all Ingenuity18 entrants, and will be an opportunity to have your way of thinking challenged, be inspired and unlock your  potential to re-shape contemporary society.

The weekend will be taking place from Friday, 23rd to Sunday 24th February and will be jam-packed with inspiring talks from world-class thinkers, innovation sessions,  a series of thought-provoking film screenings and hands-on development from industry professionals. There will also be a range of smaller sessions run by leading academics in fields of creativity, innovation, future tech. This will develop how you make sense of your purpose as an innovator. The key aim of the Ideas Summit is to move you out of your comfort zone and help you find more innovative solutions to the problems you are facing.

INNOVATION DIPLOMA

Once the weekend is over, the next stage will be the ingenuity18, develop, innovation diplomaIngenuity18 Innovation Diploma. This is open to all Ingenuity18 participants – whether you are a student, staff, early-career researcher, or alumni. Participants will be split into two strands: an undergraduate Level 3 spring semester module; and a 5-week evening course for all other Ingenuity18 participants – other undergraduates, postgraduates, staff, alumni and early-career researchers. The course will take you from idea through to business plan or proposal and aims to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and practical experience required to respond to the challenges involved in managing, commercialising, and implementing innovation and new business development.

COMPETITION

So you’ve attended the Ideas Summit. You’ve gained all the ingenuity18, competevaluable information and received some in-depth development from amazing speakers and now it is competition time! Following the Ideas Summit, and alongside the Innovation Diploma, there will be time to develop your Ingenuity18 proposal for entry to the competition.

Entrants will be asked to complete an online form, which will then be independently assessed by industry experts and subject specialists.

After the proposal submission deadline on Thursday 22nd March, our panel of independent judges will select 40 teams to go through to the Ingenuity18 Pitches. Successful teams/individuals will then have a chance to receive grants from the Ingenuity18 Prize Fund.

This year, the prize fund will be split up between the three entrant categories:

  • Students and Alumni
  • Early-career researchers
  • Staff

With over £100,000 worth of prizes available, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Entrepreneurial Potential Award, there is a range of financial and non-financial support from competition sponsors available for winners of Ingenuity18.  A full list of prizes will be released in due course.

Please Note: Entrants from UNMC and UNNC are only eligible for the £10,000 Asia Business Centre Prize. Where relevant, applications by early-career researchers and staff must have approval from their line manager, or Head of Department before submission. If your idea relates to University-owned IP, you must also have approval from the IP Office. Failure to do so will mean you cannot take part in Ingenuity18.


The deadline to apply for Ingenuity18 is Friday 26 January at midnight (GMT). Only teams who have applied will be able to attend the Ideas Summit.
