What made you want to be an entrepreneur?

After teaching public speaking as part of a society for a year, we found fulfilment, satisfaction and pleasure in helping others to develop their communication and presentation skills. As great as this was, it was when we began receiving external invitations to hold workshops outside of our usual teaching hours that we realised the high demand for what we were offering, ultimately driving us to embark upon this business venture. Our passion for helping people to overcome their fear of public speaking and develop strong interpersonal communication skills, combined with our personal fear of spending our lives in the corporate “rat race” were key factors in our decision to become entrepreneurs. Our drive is the opportunity to utilise our expertise to develop the professional and personal skills of others, in our own unique and engaging way.

What is your business concept?

Our business concept is to equip people with the necessary skills and knowledge to become strong communicators and presenters in professional, academic, and everyday social situations. Through our themed sessions on topics such as body language, confidence, controlling nerves etc. we ensure that all aspects of communication both on stage and off are broken down in an easy to understand manner. Regular sessions will soon be accessible to members of the public, and we also offer a premium service to companies and institutions who receive half-day or full day sessions tailored to the needs of the establishment and their employees/attendees.

What stage are you currently at in setting up your company/business?

We are currently in the process of compiling our ongoing portfolio of sessions we have held and individuals we have coached. The aim is to build an archive large and diverse enough that our reputation precedes our name, building value to our brand name is essential for both long and short-term success.

We are also preparing for our next set of innovative workshops which we will begin marketing for in the coming month. Session sizes will be limited to around 15 people to guarantee an effective, engaging and tailor-made service for each attendee, trialling a more intense yet rounded experience.

What challenges have you faced during the process?

Finding rooms with the capacity to accommodate larger groups has been a challenge. In the early stages, and with the service we offer, it is difficult to advertise certain events without a secured venue, which is one of the reasons for our capping of attendee numbers.

How has being an Ingenuity Lab member helped you?

The Roundtable Sessions have been highly beneficial to us. Speaking and listening to people who have been involved in starting their own business is always a great chance to both network and to learn from the experiences of others. Alongside this is the opportunity to learn from the experienced mentors who have given a valuable insight into the things we should look out for, the opportunities ahead of us, and the mistakes we should avoid.

The environment and vibe within the Lab have been great each and every time we have entered. People are very open and willing to share their progress and challenges as you share yours with them. There is a real sense of a community and a mutual desire to succeed which is important to any business.

What are your goals for the rest of 2017?

  • Continue to build our portfolio and brand name
  • Hold an official company opening event for networking and exposure
  • Trial our innovative new workshop layout
  • Begin to hold workshops and seminars for the public
  • Personally improve ourselves and increase our skillset in order to be rounded authorities in a wider range of subjects in addition to the ones we have already mastered – leading by example on the journey of self-improvement.
