Location 4: East Lane, Bawdsey

Location 4: Bawdsey, Suffolk

Today was the final day of filming; we had to record the introduction and conclusion to the film, as well as a number of voiceover pieces.  Following discussions with Simon yesterday, we decided that East Lane Bawdsey (around 20 minutes from Woodbridge) would be a good location to open and conclude the film. This is the location of one of several Martello towers, constructed along the coast at the beginning of the nineteenth century to warn off an attack by Napoleon, playing on notions of other measures of coastal defence. The tower at Bawdsey is apparently now owned by the artist Sarah Lucas.

This was the first breezy day of the trip, and with snow still lying underfoot and an onshore wind it really was very cold. This was a great incentive for Steve to learn his lines quickly and need minimal retakes! Ben, Tom and Matt also captured lots of cutaway shots as for the first time this week, a little sunshine streamed through the grey cloud.

Steve learns his lines!

So that’s it – the end of our trip. Over the next few weeks the Nice and Serious team will be editing the film, adding a soundtrack, and doing lots of other technical things! Steve and I will be back in the office next week, planning the ‘Planet under Pressure’ event where the film will have its premier screening, and looking forward to seeing the rough cut of the film. At that point we’ll be going down to London to meet with Ben and Tom to input our thoughts on how the film is shaping up. I hope to be able to share the finished film on the blog in March.  Thanks for reading and please continue to comment!
