Work, rest and play safely at university
The Students’ Union has an important role in Week One – to bring on the fun! But it’s also here to make sure you have a safe time at university. Mike Dore, Equal Opportunities & Welfare Officer, runs through some of the ways to help you work, rest and play during Week One and beyond.
University life can be hectic and stressful at times, so it is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle to get the best out of your studies. Be sure to check out the HealthyU initiative for tips on keeping active, eating well and sexual health. It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to go out every night drinking excessively – and that’s ok!
At Nottingham, there are plenty of events for those of you who don’t fancy hitting the clubs every night. During Week One for example, there will be a phenomenal hypnotist, the Friday Alternative with Mental Wealth, and a comedy show at The Den – after all, laughter is the best medicine! If you are on a club night, look out for our friendly furry face – the Easy Tiger! He is the Students’ Union mascot promoting safe sex and might even have some freebies if you ask nicely. The Students’ Union ‘Why Let Good Times Go Bad?’ campaign will be running all through Week One, not only providing tasty snacks but promoting responsible drinking – as we want you to enjoy your night with no regrets!
If you’re feeling restless then get down to the gym and sports centre, whether you want to improve your fitness on the treadmill or simply have some fun at the squash court. You’re bound to find something you enjoy and make some new friends while you’re there. It’s important to stay active, but also really important to register at Cripps Health Centre during Week One; it’s only takes minutes and then you’re set for the whole of your time at university.
While you’re having a great time at Freshers’ Week and the rest of your first term – make sure you stay safe and look after yourselves and I’m sure you’ll have the time of your lives!
