Guest Blog: Graduates of 1974 and 1975 Reunion
Written by Cathy Fearnley (Zoology 1974)
A number of graduates who have stayed in touch over a period of forty years (contact mostly through Christmas cards) got together the weekend of June 13th. We stayed at the Orchard Hotel which is a lovely modern hotel on Campus built opposite the Sports Centre.
We met for lunch in what for us was ‘The Buttery’ (now called Mooch) in the Portland Building. Later we gathered for drinks at 6pm in the Hotel and then had a meal in the restaurant. We also booked a conference room for an hour after dinner and pieced together a movie presentation of converted to digital Super 8 movies and photos of us all. We reminisced the good times and all of us agreed how lucky we were to have free tuition fees and grants towards accommodation. Two of us remembered paying £75 to Willoughby Hall for a full term’s accommodation which included 3 meals per day and all laundry and cleaning. We didn’t realise how lucky we were at the time.
Among the group we had Graduates of Zoology, Engineering Theoretical Mechanics, and English who have turned into teachers, entrepreneurs, Business Analysts, Web Designer, Oil Industry Executive, IT specialist, County Councillor, Oil Executive, retired RAF officer.
The University didn’t seem to have changed too much except for the security access to all the Halls of Residence.
Many thanks to Genelva from the Alumni Relations team for all her help in organising our reunion. Also thanks to the friendly staff at the Orchard Hotel.
We all really enjoyed meeting up again and found we hadn’t really changed that much. We vowed to do it again soon.
